  • And, Where Have All the Manners Gone?

Last Sunday, on our way to an evening music concert, we stopped into a local store with hopes of finding a few home items. Silly me for not noticing that closing time was in 20 minutes! But, rest assured, we were informed off this the instant we entered the store. "You have 20 minutes," said the woman behind the counter. This, after giving us a dirty look. What a welcome, I thought. And how professional!

No different, however, than my last visit to the bank on a Friday afternoon when the lines were out the door and the teller (yes, one teller in the lobby) was busy looking at her computer with anotther bank employee. The rest of us stood there hoping we would make that ominous 2:00 deadline. Someone in the drive through lane must have asked why there was such a wait because the assistant manager yelled through the microphone that it was lunch time and the bank was short of staff. Well, that explains it! And how professional!

I was among the few who voted last month and I will be there again in October and again in November. I admit the issues are confusing at times and the latest "sheriff-to-be" fiasco is enough to make anyone cringe. In fact, until the other day I wasn't really sure what or who I was voting for. But now I know. I vote for those who will set a good example in our community. Those who can be professional even when it is closing time. Those who can lead and still treat others with kindness and respect. I vote for those who believe that a community with good manners and professional customer service CAN and WILL succeed economically and morally. I vote for those who will take responsibility for their mistakes and move forward even more determined to "get it right". I vote for those who really mean it when they say Please and Thank You.
